St.Michaël de draak
Het klinkt misschien vreemd maar ik begin steeds meer in te zien waarom mijn vader mij in 1976 naar de vrije school stuurde en niet naar een gewone school. De vrije school waar werd onderwezen naar de leringen van Duits filosoof Rudolf Steiner. Wat ik daar allemaal heb geleerd daar heb ik nu nog steeds profijt van, dit in tegenstelling tot wat ik op andere scholen daarna heb geleerd. Wat ik op de vrije school heb geleerd is me allemaal bij gebleven en wat ik op andere scholen heb geleerd helemaal niet.
Als kind vond ik het allemaal heel vreemd. We kregen op een hele andere manier les dan op de school waar ik voor de Vrije school op zat. We kregen een periode rekenen, taal, geschiedenis en aardrijkskunde. Een periode duurde vier weken. Naast die periode van vier weken kregen we handenarbeid "hout en koper bewerking", we leerden naaien, breien en haken maar ook koken, euritmie, filosofie, mythologie en metselen. Ook kregen we onderwijs in sterrenkunde, natuurkunde, toneelspelen en muziekles.
Maar dat was niet alles. We vierde ook feesten die ik niet kende zoals St.-Maarten, St. Michaël en St.Jansdag. Het was toen dat ik voor het eerst in contact kwam met oude reeds vergeten feestdagen van de Kelten. Op 31 oktober vierde we Samhain en op 21 december was er de spiraal van dennentakken waar we allemaal een kaarsje in mochten aansteken. Dat was dus het Yule feest en we speelden dan ook een toneelstuk.

Nu ik me dit allemaal begin te realiseren ben ik mijn vader nog meer dankbaar dat hij mij naar de vrije school heeft gestuurd dan ik al was. Hoewel ik mijn vader en zusje in die tijd enorm heb gemist "ik woonde toen in een kindertehuis ver weg van huis" heb ik heel veel geleerd op de vrije school waar ik nu dus nog profijt van heb. De vrije school heeft mij gevormd in de mens die ik vandaag ben. De vrije school zorgde ervoor dat ik altijd een open gedachten heb gehouden, ze leerde me dat wij allemaal gelijk zijn ongeacht afkomst, ras, geloof of sekse. Het leerde mij ook dat er een balans moet zijn tussen mens en natuur net als dat je met jezelf altijd in balans moet zijn.
Mijn vader in in 2000 overleden maar alsnog, dank dat u mij naar de vrije school stuurde en niet naar een gewone school. Het heeft mijn leven enorm verrijkt en heeft mij gevormd tot de mens die ik vandaag ben. En met die persoon die ik nu ben, ben ik heel content.

The free school
St.Michael and the dragon
It may sound strange, but I am beginning to see why my father sent me to free school in 1976 and not to a regular school. The free school where the teachings of German philosopher Rudolf Steiner were taught. What I have learned there, I still benefit from it, contrary to what I learned at other schools afterwards. What I learned at the free school has all stayed with me and what I have learned at other schools not at all.
As a child I found it all very strange. We were taught in a completely different way than at the school I attended before the Free School. We were given a period of arithmetic, language, history and geography. A period lasted four weeks. In addition to that four-week period, we received manual work "wood and copper processing", we learned to sew, knit and crochet, but also to cook, eurhythmic, philosophy, mythology and bricklaying. We also received education in astronomy, physics, theatre and music lessons.
But that wasn't all. We also had celebrations that I did not know such as St.Maarten, St. Michael and St.Jansdag. It was then that I first came into contact with old, already forgotten, Celtic holidays. On October 31 we celebrated Samhain and on December 21 there was the spiral of pine branches in which we were all allowed to light a candle. So that was the Yule party and we played a theatre piece.

Now that I am starting to realize all this, I am even more grateful to my father for sending me to free school than I already was. Although I missed my father and sister enormously at the time "I was living in a children's home far away from home" I learned a lot at the free school which I now still benefit from. Free school shaped me in the person I am today. Free school ensured that I always kept an open mind, it taught me that we are all equal regardless of origin, race, religion or gender. It also taught me that there must be a balance between people and nature, just as you must always be in balance with yourself.
My father past away in 2000 but still, thank you for sending me to the free school and not to a regular school. It has greatly enriched my life and has shaped me into the person I am today. And with that person that I am now, I am very content.
